I got (for free) this snail at my lfs. They got it with a bunch of feeder guppies from a person who just dropped them all of to get rid of them. It is about as big as a golf ball and very plain. I have it in a tank without plants. Do not want a plant eater in a plant tank. Thanks in advance for any kinda id on it.
shaped like an apple snail. I know the pic sux but it is the best I could get of it. It is cleaning up the rocks in one of my african tanks.
not the greatest of pictures but here is one with it in my hand

| It could be a brigs (mystery) snail but it`s impossible to tell from your pic. See if you can either put it in a quart jar or just hold it in your hand to take another picture. Seeing the sworl of the shell or the snails actual face would help also. Dawn |

I have been looking through some pics of snails and the one that looks like it the most is what they call the giant columbian ramshorn. Though not a true ramshorn snail but in the apple family. So I think I was right in not putting it in any planted tank as the columbian is a plant eater and I think that apples are too. this is what it looks like.

Yep I think you are right, it does look like a giant coloumbian Ramshorn in your 2ed pic., Which is a plant eater for sure! But now remember Reg. Mystery Snails are in the apple snail familly too, but unlike most apple snails they Don`t eat live plants. Saying "Apple" Snail is like saying
" Dog" There are several different types or breeds in the same family. Dawn |

Thanks Dawn. I think it is a great looking snail and the free part makes it even prettier. LOL.
I know that the mystery snail is in the same family and do not eat plants. I have had them in the past in planted tanks. But I found out the hard way a few years back that apple snails love plants. LOL. Thank you for the input.
Surprisingly enough I do not have many snails these days. I have my tank of spixis and then I have the nerites in my brackish tank and the columbian and a gold apple in the same tank. In with my comp fry I have 2 trapdoors and I have a lot of trumpets in the tank with my Pseudotropheus saulosis, need to get rid of those, the snails not the fish lol. I have put assassins in my planted tanks as I was overrun with pond snails and ramshorns. Now I cannot find any snail other than the assassins in those tanks. I will have to get some snails to put in there for them to eat. I am hoping that the assassins will start to give me babies soon. Or maybe I have the same sex in the tanks or they have and I just haven't found them yet.
I have been looking at the different rabbit snails and I think I will have to get me some of them. Those are pretty snails. I also want more of the trapdoors. they keep that fry tank spotless!
Well enough rambling catch you later.

Yeppers I think those little rabbit snails are way too freeking cute! I`m gona have to get me some rabbits oneday soon. Oh yeah You can feed the assassin snails with Freeze dried EarthWorms when you run out of pest snails. I read they just totally love freeze dried Earthworms. I have some if you would like to try them. I can send you a sample for free Hun if you would like. Just email me your reg mail addy. I bought way too much of them for my angels. Dawn |

| Ok so now I have an other question. It looked like the two snails I have the one in the picture and my golden apple snail were mating. Is that possible and if it is, is it a good or bad thing. I have heard that some interbreeding in snails is not a good thing. Thanks. |

| Uhhhhhhhhh I`m not sure , I even segregate my different, colors of Brigs snails (I`m breeding for certain colors ) soooooo crossing is out of the question in my tanks! LOL However I do seem to remember that columbian rams can cross with some other species just can remember which one it is at the moment, but ken knows. I would imagine that some eggs that are geneticly not viable just won`t hatch , others may hatch but not survive long. Some can survive but probly won`t be able to reproduce themselfs. kinda like playing the lotto! LOL Dawn |

Well I have separated them already. I remember reading somewhere about the mixing of columbian and apples will happen but the result will not be a good snail. So if I end up with a bunch of eggs from either one I am going to dispose of them. Just to be safe. Do not want mutant snails.
Thanks for the answer Dawn it was what I was thinking. I do not breed apples or any other snail right now. I just use some for algae control etc. I do have some assassins in other tanks and was hoping to get them to breed and all but nothing from them yet, at least they have gotten rid of my problem snails. |
